I second the recommendation about the super scratcher. My clawed kitty likes those cardboard scratchers.

Also, trim his nails often. Just snip off the hooks and make sure not to cut into the quick. Ask a vet to show you how if you don't know. Without the hooked end, my cat claws things/people a lot less. But since they grow quickly, you have to snip them about every week. Now he's over a year and I cut them every three weeks or so.

They also make double sided sticky pads to put on furniture. The cat won't like the sticky feel on its paws. You can find them at pet stores.

Last, deter your cat when he/she is doing it. Clap your hands loudly, shake a tin can with pennies in it or squirt him/her with clean water in a sprayer to startle them. Sort of breaks the habit.

declawin is like cuttin off your kitties toes, why would anyone wana do that?!!! Its natural for a cat to scratch so just get them a scratching post, make sure their claws are cut-at least every two weeks, make sure they know that they can use the post for scratchin-put some nip on it. You can't really get them to stop scratchin bc thats one of the things they were born to do. DON'T DECLAW PLZ! Declawin can cause other prob, like the cat might not wana use the litterbox or they wont cover it etc..also they need their claws for security and other reasons. OR give them an old chair to scratch on-if u have1 made outta of scarthchable material, anything will work-Good luck!!

If you don't want to declaw then get kitty a scratching post. There are sprays to use on your furniture that cats can't stand the smell of........but they will still want to scratch. I don't like declawing but I had to have a declawed cat where I live as there is wall too wall carpet and it is in our lease that cat's must be declawed and spayed or neutered because cats will spray urine and scratch carpets to mark their territory they aren't being bad they are just being cats. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do not what we want to do. I can now have nice furniture because my cat can't scratch it all up.

They sell a thing at walmart called a super scratcher. It's really cheap (less than $5) I just got a new cat and haven't gotten her declawed yet and since I've gotten that, it's the only thing she's scratched on!

Buy it a scratching post or something of that sort to exercise its claws.

Be sure to show it what it's used for, by taking it to the post when it starts to scratch something else. It won't take long before it catches on.

Cheers,

CR

Try pet repellent and put it on your furniture. If the cat is scratching himself, give it a bath. Then put flea repellent on all furniture, rugs, curtains, etc....

If it is an indoor cat, perhaps you should have its front claws removed. I have three indoor cats and all have had the front claws removed and they are perfectly fine as is all of my furniture.
