Geography:
Australia is the world's smallest continent but also the world's largest island. It is the only continent in the world to be totally devoid of any active volcanoes. It is the flattest continent, the driest continent, but unlike popular belief not all of the continent is hot desert (there are tropical rainforests, large cities and even skiing fields)

Population:
It has one of the lowest national population densities in the world. Despite being almost the size of continental USA, it only has 20 million people living there. The largest city is Sydney, which is also the oldest city, but it is NOT the capital of Australia as your first answer said. The capital of Australia is Canberra, which is also the world's only planned capital city.

History:
Indigenous Australians have been living here for over 40,000 years. While there were reported sightings by Europeans since the late 1600s, Captain James Cook officially claimed Australia's east coast in 1770 for Britain. In 1788, convicts from overcrowded British prisons were shipped to begin a penal colony in what was to become Sydney. Despite international jokes that Australians were all criminals, the vast majority of the Australian popluation is decended from free settlers (British and Irish) from the 1800s, gold miners from Asia during the numerous gold rushes in the late 1800s as well as post World War 2 immigrants from Europe and other places.

Politics and Government:
Australia is a constitutional monarchy, meaning that the Queen of England is also the Head of State of Australia, but in reality she never exercises her power and has little influence over the running of Australia, however if she wanted to she probably could.
We don't have a President, we have a Prime Minister. In Australia, voting is compulsary for anyone over the age of 18, and fines apply if you don't vote.

Culture
Australia is heavily influenced by American entertainment, Hollywood movies and American sitcoms. However, we understand and relate to British television also and probably enjoy and receive more British television than America, so we are sort of a mix of the two. Australia has a surprisingly big film industry for such a small country, and it is growing still. For example Star Wars Episode 2 and 3 were produced and fimed in Australia and had many Australian actors, same with Superman Returns. The Metropolis shots were shot at various locations around Sydney. Even though the architecture and urban landscape was digitally edited, Sydney residents can still easily recognise Sydney Buildings. All three Matrix films were also produced in Australia and in and around Sydney. Australia is also a very multicultural country with citizens from all over the world.

There are so many interesting facts about Australia - thousands of them. But I will give you a few.

*** It was NOT "used as a prison." Convicts were shipped there but there were also those who came to build a new life for themselves.

*** It has the most unique wildlife in the world. Some were so strange the early naturalists thought they were "faked" when the specimens were sent to England (see the history of the platypus)

*** Some of the most venomous and/or dangerous amimals live here. We have several types of spider that can kill a human. We have a snake so agressive that it will actually chase humans (most snakes usually run away from humans)

*** Australians are the most laid back, easy going people on earth. Add a bar-b-q, some beers, summer and a few hundred flies and they become even more laid back.

*** The kangaroo is the world's only legally edible national symbol. (Kangaroo steak is really yummy)

*** CANBERRA is the capital of Australia (not Sydney as Jessica said above)

*** The country is really big - roughly the size of continental USA. So don't think about doing a backpacking tour and try to visit Perth by hiking from Sydney!

*** We hosted the "best ever" Olympic Games in 2000 in the city which has the most beautiful harbour in the world, Sydney

*** A koala bear is NOT actually a bear. It is a marsupial (carry their young in a pouch). The word Koala means "no water" because koalas do not drink water. They get all their nutirents from gum leaves.

*** Koalas look cute and cuddley but that is where it ends - the look. They have sharp claws and are not afraid to use them to inflict horrible gaping wounds on humans if they are bothered.

*** Melbourne - the capital of Victoria (state) has the biggest concentration of Greek population outside Greece.

*** We do not talk like Mick Dundee or Steve Irwin!!

Use any search engine on the internet - you will find plenty more of information about this beautiful country.

But keep on asking about it on Yahoo Answers. You will find people telling you more interesting stuff about Australia you might not have heard of.

The two animals on our coat of arms are the Kangaroo and the Emu, chosen as they are the Only two Australian animals that cannot walk backwards (and therefore will always be carrying our sheild and country forwards)

oh, and our capital is Canberra, not Sydney as previously answered (but who can blame people for thinking that!)

Well, this is what I observed in India, The rich become richer, but the poor is getting worser day by day. due to financial debts, the farmers kill themselves, the gov. gives the money for the starving family to live, but the lenders take it and become rich. I am proud to be an Indian, I love India, but whts the big deal if the land is full of oppurtunists? Just look at our country...It has criminals fighting the elections, " if the protectors turn predators then who will save us? "
