From the START menu, click on RUN then type MSCONFIG. Go to the startup section and uncheck many of the applications that you do not need. Of course, you want your anti-virus program.

Restart the computer and check things out. You might take this time to get your anti-virus updates if you can go on-line. RUN a full scan.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Hopefully, this will have cleaned up your computer quite a bit.

You will want to run Disk Cleanup. Then RIGHT click on your C drive (in the MyComputer section) and pick PROPERTIES. Pick the TOOLS section and click on CHECK NOW. Check both tests then allow it to RUN the tests after you reboot. Reboot the computer and let that test run.

When it starts up again, use DEFRAG to clean things up on your C drive. Eventually, you should see better performance.

When you look at your C drive Properties, check to see how much FREE space that you have. I recommend that you have at least 1GB of free space.

During this process, you might have to REBOOT into SAFE MODE. From that, run an anti-virus scan. You see, these viruses are often inactive when in Safe mode.

You know, that IE7 might not be a good thing for your computer, since you only have 384 MB RAM. So you might Uninstall that.

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. You might have to CHECK the box that says SHOW UPDATES
4. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7, click it, and then click Change/Remove.

If you cannot find Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs, click Start, click Run, type
%windir%\ie7 \spuninst\spuninst.exe
(I added a space after ie7 so that the whole line would display)
and then press ENTER.

For more information, check this page at the Microsoft website. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/aa740486.aspx

If you have further trouble, you might try the RESTORE thing in the System Tools folder and go back a few days before you made this terrible mistake.

Thank you for asking. Good luck and Happy Computing!

First of all dump the download managers. Most are junk and some are malware. You DONT need them if you are cable internet.

Your first complaint should be to your cable company though...96K is S.L.O.W...

You can safely dump the windows desktop search. This is a process and memory hog.

Dont know speedupmypc or regcure - but if they are utilities to improve startup and cure registry problems (dua) - I would say that they have no business being set to start on their own. You use them once and move on.

The ONLY utility I have similar to this is the free Winpatrol which protects from CHANGES in startup/homepage/hosts/etc. Yes I can see and disable startups and services, but at only 5M of memory, there is no impact.

I would bump up your RAM to at least 512, and go to 1G if you can afford it.

winpatrol's startup list is going to help you a lot. View the services tab to disable things you dont need (like remote registry and upnp stuff).

Normal speedup things also include defrag once a month. Delete all temp files.

If you have run all of the security software, I think you may have to reinstall Windows on your computer. There should be something in your start menu like "System Restore," or there may be disks to do this that came with your computer.

This will erase everything on your drive, so remember to back up! When you get the computer back up and running, be sure to not use IE for web browsing to keep your computer safe.

When you do a system restore, the computer will be as fast as the day you bought it.

Good luck, and email me (click on my name) if you need any more help!

I don't see why any of the legitimate progams on it would slow it down unless you're using them all at the same time. Do you scan your computer regulary for viruses? They might really slow down a computer if not done regulary. Also Disc defragmation might help
