then it really isn't free will, is it? if we are punished for making "wrong" choices isn't that more like a dictatorship than freedom?

Theres a band called Rush who have a song called Free Will.
One line goes..."if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice". I think it fits yer question.FUN FACT-Rush are Canadian.

Funny how someone who is questioning free will seems to have the free will enough to ask the question. And you have the free will enough to choose what you want. When you make choices in life they all have consequences. Some you like and some you don't. When a law was made that you can not kill or you will be punished. Did that stop murder? Nope. But gee....these ppl didn't not have a choice.....so why did they do it.

Do you see your logic. It is flawed. You have a choice. What you do with it.........is your choice. That is free will!

I don't believe that we each start with a clean slate! This may sound cruel, but if God is to command his universe, he must have the free will to run it, which by definition means we do not have it. We start out with the contamination of original sin, which condemns all of us before the Lord. He would be completely justified in sending everyone of us to hell. Call this dictatorship if you like, but the way I look at God, he is Lord of all creation and nothing we can say or do will earn our own way into heaven, including a perceived ability to make a choice for God rather than against him.

We are given free will. You have a free will to choose what some religions say, and what you want. No religion is forcing you to choose it. In christianity, i dunno if thats the religion your talking about but its the one i most i know, God gives you a free will to do whatever you want. You can kill someone, you can go have sex out of wedlock, you can make wrong choices, but you have to be ready for consequences, religion isn't the only place for this. This is life. if you do someonthing wrong, your punished. The freedom comes from what you choose to do, whether it be right or wrong.

No because along with the free will you also accept the terms freely.
