There is a difference between the meaning and use of the words of "religious" and "spiritual." Religion implies the interaction of a set code of beliefs/dogmas by a group of persons or for a large population, as in an "Organized Religion." These are many... Christian, Jewish, and Muslim organized religions and and some in other cultural regions of many lands.
Spirituality is a personal quality that is developed individually and is relative to the spiritual status of that individual in his/her relationship with Deity of choice. It does not need to have any connection with an Organized Religion... a person may be spiritual but not religious. And sad to say there are many persons who are religious and not spiritual.
So to have a religious experience is one thing and to have a spiritual experience is a totally different thing... There were many Catholic saints that were "religious" and had individual "spiritual" experiences... But one does not always go with the other.
To have a spiritual experience you have to recognize Deity/God and believe that you have a spiritual nature as well as a physical nature. These can occur unexpectedly... and are very personal.
I don't know if this help to answer your question... but it is very difficult to write about a spiritual experience. Good Luck!

Well when I was eight yrs old my friend and I were sleeping in the back yard under the stars on lounge chairs with our sleeping bags. It was a hot summer night. At the same time we notice something coming towards us floating it was a large figure with a hooded robe. We werent scared at all. We were askng eachother questions like is that a ghost. is it an agel? Is it god? This figure came right up to me and out from the sleeve of the robe was a large hand that was light up with a bright white light reaching out to me my friend said it wants to touch you, so I raised my hand up and the second my little hand was in the light I felt the most amazing feeling of being so protected and loved and warmth and peace come over me. It was the most beautiful feeling I ever experienced in my life. What do you think this was that happeded to me as a young girl I am now 45 yre old

yes I had a major spiritual experience that turned my life from one of selfishness and addiction to one of hope and love.
it is very easy to describe in words a spiritual experience but the actual inner change and feelings are so very much harder, to try to understand a profound inner experience you would need to have this experience too, words just don`t cut it.

They are some of the oddest experiences & yet some of the most exhilerating experiences, too. to see someone's life take a radical turn for the better is awesome. to see someone drop to their knees because of something I did or said is always deeply moving for me, too.
Some of them cause me to recognize g-d's power while other ones cause me to see His heart; His love.
