what i dont understand is why is that every country has competition. dont we all live on the same planet? and whatever india finds on mars will affect us all equally. if all the countries are working together then probably right now you would see the title on the news "earth mulls unmanned mission to venus by 2013". i'm not only targeting india, but every other country that has launched or will launch a shuttle .
just a thought. is there competition because if you find petrol or gold etc on mars ,the country will get it all??? or will there be a HUGE WAR on who will get those untouched minerals and jewels?

I don't think it is good idea for each country to explore space separately.

If countries on the earth start using space for war, human race is likely vanish. Hence it is not worth for each country to explore space independently.

If from outer space or from another planet earth is attacked, countries on the earth should be united to handle it. This makes the case for counties to join hands in space exploration.

The competition exists because each country has a need to be noticed; it's an ego thing. Yes, we would all benefit by knowing more about Mars because it could be inhabitable by humans. India would not be the first country to send astronauts to Mars though so there is no first there for them. But if they were able to get information about that planet that no one else has been able to retrieve, just think how that would look to all the other countries with a "India Finds Secrets of Mars" headline. What greatness; how powerful! Moves them up the power ladder in the world. Get it now?

Its a highly debatable topic i must say. Some of the points that need to be considered are :- Against this Mission - India is a developing nation and it has a lot of needs to be fulfilled first. - Its struggling with lack of infrastructure in most parts - Terrorism Problems - Poverty - Electricity - Industrialization is way below whats needed. - Population - Lack of Work Opportunity - Inflation - Black Money, Corruption, Lokpal, etc and etc. I think these are some problems that need to be taken care of first. It needs a lot of capital to take care of Infrastructure alone. So instead of spending $100m in sending a satellite to Mars, it can use the money to solve its problems first. On the other Side - In Support of the Mission - India is a Developing Nation and hence has a lot of potential to develop its status and power. - Indian Scientists work for NASA and other foreign projects because they don't have such projects in India - India has proved itself on Moon Mission and can do it on Mars as well. - Its going include India to those nations that have knowledge and know how of such missions. Its on us to weigh both the sides with our own prejudice and decide whether the Cretinism is justified or not.

If we focus upon building a rocket Ship we accomplish that. I would love to see person-kind focus upon ending poverty.

We have enough resources, all we need do is give 100% of the need, to 100% of those in need.

It's human nature, there will be wars in space in the far future. that is, if we don't kill each other off first.
