The first thing you need to do is contact all of your creditors and see if you can work out a payment schedule. Make sure you can stick with any arrangements. You can often work out a settlement for less than is owed. Once you have these balances cleared, you should see your credit score rise. While you are clearing your credit you should start saving money for a down payment on a house. It takes time to rebuild your credit. Don't get discouraged. You can do it.

It's relatively straightforward, follow these 3 steps:

Current bills: this is your number one priority, do not be late on any current debts, like credit card bills or car payments. A 30 day late here will hurt far worse than anything you've done in the past. Limit taking on new debt, and keep cc balances low. Many people need positive trade lines (TLs) more than they need to remove old debts. Focus your main efforts here. Get a secured credit card with New Millenium Bank (no credit check) and look up Crown Jewelers (again, no credit check) to start building a positive history.

Credit issues 1-2 years old: Call up the creditor and work out payment arrangements. Even if it's $10 a month. They will usually work with you. Negotiate a "pay for delete", which means they will delete the negative entry from your credit file. Again, this is only after you are sure that you are not late on your current obligations.

Credit issues over 3-5 years: Don't worry about them. Paying them won't improve your credit at this point. You can still get a mortgage with charge-offs over 3 years old. Dispute what you can with the credit bureaus, for stubborn ones write the BBB. In time your credit will improve.

By paying your bills on time !

Anyone you owe... PAY THEM ! It really is that simple. Your credit score will go up simply by paying those you owe.

If you need a loan and you have crappy credit, be sure to check out a "credit union". They seem to be more customer orientated and willing to work with those truly trying to make effort towards changing their life.
