If they are kept healthy as a pet an not bread they can live upwards of 20 years. However you must feed it a good diet, lots of fruit, veggies and other foods! It also must have lots of exercise allowing it free flight time out of it's cage everyday. If it keeps healthy and exercised you can expect a long life you of your cockateil. Also, they come from Australia, so don't worry too much about them temperatures. If he's an inside bird, just make sure he's protected form the extremes like giving him a bath and spraying him with water when it's hot and coving his cage in the cold nights.
Also, the males tend to be more assertive and behave differently then then the females. If you do a net search you might be able to find more info on finding their sex. Good luck!

looks like you got plenty of answers on life expectancy ...sexing a cockatiel can be difficult.v Usually the males are more colorful than the females but now there are so many differenf varieties to chhose from it is hard to tell. you might try looking under the tail feathers...the female will have bands running across and the male will not or the male will usually have a two tones whistle (wolf whistle) and the female will only have a one tone. or just wait and see if it starts to lay eggs..if this happens...you got a girl!

I live in a seasonal climate also.mine died at 17 years old. she did summer-saults on the bottom of the cage one day and just died. 2 of my 3 children watched on in horror. It was bad for them to see because i had bird before they were born, so for them she had always been in our home. I walked in the door with my youngest(from summer-school). and the older two were crying on the couch and told us what happened. I had no idea she was sick.I got her at 3 months old. Was told she was a boy because of all the yellow on her head. but then she started to lay eggs.(after 2 years)So I knew she was a girl.I guess even the breeders can be wrong?I was told that they can live between 15 and 30 years.

I think about 30- 40 years. you can check it out online, or at the pet store. Make sure to keep a clean cage ,and plenty of exersise for a longer life. you can also tell gender by the colors some times. Females are grayer, and less colorful then the males.

They live for 10-15 years if they breed.
If they dont breed they may stay up to 30 years if you keep them healthy.
