To keep from bumping their heads when they got into their planes. Can't fly if you're unconscious.

Their radio receivers have been in the helmet. with out the helmet they could have had no touch with their flight leaders. They have been very conscious they have been Kamikaze pilots formerly they ever took off to attack their objectives. They went by way of their ceremonies and pledged their allegiance to their Emperor formerly ever entering into their planes.

WW II "helmets" weren't hard hats like those of the jet age. A fabric-and-leather hat with goggles was pretty useful especially if flying open cockpit.

Because, the helmet contained the headset, a communications
device.
The helmet was not a protective device. In fact it was quite soft.
They were quite warm, however.
