Dough ornaments.

Find a recipe for salt dough. Roll it out and have them press Christmas shaped cookie-cutters (trees, bells, angels, stars, etc.) into the dough. You'll have to help them lift up the cut-out designs. Be sure to make a hole near the top of each one (this will be for the string to go through).

You bake them in slow oven until they are are dry and then then can paint them. These are NOT cookies for eating, so can use washable tempura paints to paint them with and not work about about getting food colouring stains all over things.

When they're finished, be sure to write their names and the year on the back.

I have a 2 year old and a 4(3& 9/10ths) year old too. We made a paper chain Christmas decoration. I cut up the strips of colored paper and the kids decorated them with glitter glue. After they dried, we glued them all together and hung them in our living room. It was lots of fun for them and not too much work for me.

You can get these pens that write on ceramic plates, bowls, etc and then you bake them and the pen sets. My 4 year old is doing that this year on cheap white cookie plates. Michaels might carry them.

They can mix up cookies (you bake them) or they can cut out cookie shapes, or frost them. They can cut out jello you've already made with cookie cutters. Make a video of them doing a play, or a puppet show.
