We recently adopted a 4 month old kitten. We brought her home with upper respiratory, but she seems to be better now. Our older cat (female, spayed, 4 years) has the URI vaccine, but has suddenly come down with this eye infection... she has white goo coming out of her eye, to the point where it sometimes won't open. It's very itchy, and there is something in her eye blocking part of it. She is very sensitive, and turns away whenever we try to look at it. We rubbed part of it away with a warm washcloth, but it's not getting better. Does anyone know what this is or could be and any treatments ... we can't get her to the vet until tomorrow, so anything to help her will be greatly appreciated!

If she will let you try placing a warm (not hot) wet washcloth over the eye. This will loosen up any discharge as well as soothe the conjunctiva and the eye. It will also speed up the blood flow to help clear up the inflammation and infection. Your new kitten probably also came with viral Herpes (species specific, it gives kitties eye infections and URI's). The wash cloth with provide her some comfort but def go to the vet tomorrow as it will most likely not heal on it's own at this point. Some antibiotic eye ointment is needed.

i used to take care of kittens who had that happen to them all the time. Their eyes would get all goopy and crusted closed. Its sad but the best thing to do is clean it often with a wet paper towel. Dont use vaseline it could get in their eyes and hurt them. URI is very infectious and it will need to be seen by the vet and be re-evaluated for medication. Amoxicillin can sometimes work but it doesnt always do the trick so go see the vet and they will prescribe what is best for your animal. good luck and hope everything goes great for you!!

actually, my tabby goldie kind of had a similar problem. it's just an infection. the vet gave us 2 eye drops. prednisone and just opthamalic drops. after about 2 weeks, she got better. for now, you're doing the right thing. keep wiping with a warm cloth.\
good luck!

It might be conjunctivitis, a vet will have to prescribe an antibiotic ointment. I am fostering two kittens and their eyes were shut closed with crust and after 2-3 days with the ointment they healed very nicely.

You're doing the right thing. Just keep wipping it off with a warm damp washcloth. Your vet will give you some eye medication and your cat will be better shortly. : )

Take your kitten to a vet. Alot of times getting your kitten vaccinated will help with many of the eye problems.

I would get her to the vet and in the meantime, I would try and gentley wipe the eye with a washcloth or cotton and warm water to keep it from gooping up. Good Luck.
