Since you are married, you have the option of filing your tax return as "Married Filing Jointly" or "Married Filing Separately". The vast majority of people benefit significantly by filing jointly.

When you file jointly, using form 1040, you will check box 2 under "Filing Status" for "Married Filing Jointly". Then, under "Exemptions", you will check box 6a to claim yourself and 6b to claim your wife. Checking box 6b is how you claim her. You do NOT enter her as a dependent. You do this regardless if she earned income or not. Hopefully, you have been doing this in prior years as well. If not, you still have time to go back and fix or "amend" the prior years tax returns.

Yes you can. You can claim joint or file seperatly. Try both ways to see which one gets the most money back. I am a professional tax preparer. www.shaydzofluv.com
