Evolution.
I guess we all used to taste like snotty mucus, until we hopped out of the sea and grew more meaty bits. Presumably, we still have snotty mucous bits because they didn't need any alteration, to help us survive.
Can't remember the process very clearly, though...

Yikes. I agree that their flavor is disgusting. Having not made it a practice to taste snotty mucus, I'll take your word for its similarity.

I agree with you when eating them raw. Baking or grilling them is much more palatable! Enjoy.
