Wouldn't you rather spend eternity in a perfect place, instead of a place of fire and brimestone?

Stick your hand in a fire for 30 seconds, then ask this question again.

Actually to answer your question seriously, when a believer dies only his spirit goes to heaven and it is exactly as you say, it is eternal and cannot be harmed (Believers are given an new immortal body - see 1 Corinthians 15). When an unbeiever dies it is his eternal spirit and natural soul that go to hell, so there he can never die (cease existance ) because of his eternal spirit, but can suffer eternally because of his natural soul
The Bible says, "the soul that sins it shall die."

we don't "need" God. we are God, collectively. it's all in the definitions. some religions teach that God is a human-like father figure passing judgement on us all. i think that is a metaphor used and distored by religions to keep the followers in line. it suggests that if we displease "him" we will be punished.

i believe that God is much bigger than that.

we are parts of God- the cells that make up God. along with everything else. God is the the pure consciousness that makes us and the universe work. everything has varying degrees of consciousness- we are very high on that scale, but not high enough to really grasp the ultimate truth of what God really is.

the Supreme, being

in other words- God is unlimited potential in the state of eternaly becoming- whatever we ( and many other beings) decide next.

and yes, i believe that we do always go on living- continuing to evolve to higher and higher states of consciousness. we shall be as the Gods- we already are, in that we are magnificent creators- creating our own life experiences. we are more powerful than we know.

peace

It is unlikely that we have eternal souls, and even more unlikely that there is a God.
