There's a huge message of God's care in the 23rd Psalm. Every sentence has specific meaning. We would understand all of it much better if we were familiar with the real methods and ways a shepherd took care of his sheep. But, for me, the main meaning I hold close is that, yes, I may well "walk through the valley of the shadow of death", but the Lord WILL be with me the whole way. He did not promise we would never have rough roads, but He did promise to navigate. He will never leave thee.

Good question. This is probably my favorite psalm. It is often recited at funerals to comfort the loved ones of the deceased. My interpretation and understand of the psalm is that it marks the passage from life here on earth to the afterlife-(eternal life in Heaven.) It begins with "The Lord is my Shepherd..." It talks about going through the valley of the shadow of death and says I shall fear no evil, thy rod and thy staff comfort me. Thou prepare a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, my cup runneth over...surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever(eternal life). It tells us about what happens after we die and as Christians who believe the Lord is our Savior, the promise of eternal life.

To me, it is David speaking about his experience of God. He has had the experience of an unseen power that has seemed to protect him, in the same way that a shepherd protects his/her sheep. He goes on to address God personally, saying that he knows from this experience that God will do the same for him in all circumstances.

It is meant to convince those who accept it that safety and contentment are best achieved by reducing oneself to the level of sheep (see "still water" reference) and accepting any direction given without thought or complaint.
