Those that do cause problems for others in the fast lane trying to overtake as the ones behind in the middle lane also have to overtake and the fast lane becomes the slow lane.
Get in the slow lane.

Thanks for answers so far, i have seen this quite frequently and it is mainly when then is not much traffic on the roads.
It is suppose to be rthat you drive in the slow lane until you need to overtake, if you are going to be behind someone for more than 10 secs before overtaking again you should move back.
And yes i agree with annie i'm sure they are the cause of most accidents too.

Drives me nuts too. Especially on a completely empty motorway with nothing at all in the slow lane.
Here's what I do: stay in slow lane, come up towards them at whatever (legal) speed you're doing, whip round them into the fast lane then immediately back into the slow lane, maintaining your (legal) speed.
For extra satisfaction, blare your horn constantly during the manoeuvre!

Hey Sarah, I think there should be a law against it. I travel all over the country late night mostly and I've been on empty motorways then you come across the idiot in the middle lane. The two outside lanes are for overtaking!!! You have to drive out into the third lane to get past them and when you look across to see what's going on, they're just sat there with not a care in the world, doing 68 mph. It's an offence to undertake and if you get caught doing that the chances are you will lose your license. Let's put it to whoever that this should be brought to an end and anyone caught dawdling up the middle lane of the motorway should have to re-sit their test.

I'm not a middle lane driver BUT...I know why most of those annoying people DO drive in the middle lane. Most people drive in the middle lane because they aren't paying close enough attention that the far left lane has turned into a slip road OFF of the motorway they need to be on. And so they aren't caught out ever again....everyone and their dog drives in the middle lane.
What equally annoys me is the medium drivers then get into the fast lane and make all those going quicker in the fast lane slow down and lose their pace. Chain reaction. I don't think half the people on the roads deserve to drive. They don't follow anything that they learned. The driving test is now one big joke. You drive one way to pass your test and then completely different in the "real world".
Also the people that don't pay attention that most places with three lanes (We have several plainly marked) The far left is for turning only....the middle lane is for straight on in the outside lane and the right hand lane is for straight on in the inside lane. There needs to be a large raised curb on the left turn only lanes to stop these jugheads from going straight on and then there are three cars trying to squeeze into a roundabout at the same time.
There is no simple way to judge things. YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION!!!
Thanks for letting me rant too!

I don't normally, but when I'm a bit bored I like to play a game with them. What you do is keep an eye out for the car catching you up slowly when you are overtaking traffic in the inside lane. See if they move out to the outside lane to overtake you. If they don't stay where you are, and see how long they will stay behind you without overtaking in the outside lane. It's surprising how many drivers will not use the outside lane. They'll follow you for miles! Just be ready to nip back into the inside lane if they try to sneak past you on it. Really passes the time on the motorway!

It has been proven that the most efficient lane to drive in is the middle lane of a motorway. Not only can you maintain a more consistent speed which gives greater fuel efficiency, more environmentally friendly. You also avoid those slower drivers in the inside lane who cause you to drive less smoothly, excessive braking and such like leading to a less efficient way of driving. Lastly, by avoiding those in the outside lane if it is a three lane motorway, who insist on tailgating, flashing their headlights etc etc, even though you may well be driving within the recognised speed limit does constitute a dangerous situation. I rest my case....

Short answer - NO.
I wish people would get the lane names right. Where in the highway code does it say "Slow, Middle and Fast" lanes. The speed limit is the same for all lanes - 70MPH for a car.
Whilst I do not agree with people sitting in the middle lane when the NEARSIDE lane is clear, people who call them slow etc are just as guilty as not knowing the highway code as those that sit in the middle lane!

I the one in the fast lane breaking the speed limit (only joking for any police out there).
I don't see that many people who stick in the middle lane when the inside lane in clear. Our motorways are way too crowded for that to happen these days.

If people who drive in that lane cause accidents, it's because the frustrated overtaker will be all plssed off and once s/he overtakes, s/he will be driving angry, and wrap their car round a tree, so it's the overtakers fault, not the lane hog. As for people bitching about it, just undertake them, it's not as if they'd move into your path.

I wouldn't dare do it! If my husband found out he'd kill me!
He is a coach driver and it causes him lots of problems because they all tend to drive slower too! He cant overtake (legally) on the inside lane or use the outside lane either.
I dont know any Coach or Lorry driver who doesn't get annoyed!!!!!
