My lcd doesnt have HDMI input but has DVI, and the dvd player doesnt have dvi output only component, composite, svideo and hdmi, i would use component but i wanna upconvert dvd's and from what ive read that isnt allowed because of some protection stuff, but if i were to use a HDMI to DVI cable off of like ebay from the dvd to the tv would it work and would it still look good, and if that would work what would i do about the audio because doesnt the hdmi have the audio integrated and the dvi doesnt? any help would be appreciated thanks.

HDMI is backwards compatible (for video) with DVI. So, yes a DVI - HDMI cable will work to take an upconverted signal from the HDMI output of the DVD player to the DVI input of the projector. Since you don't need the sound to go to the projector you don't need an HDMI connector on the projector ... in fact the DVI connection is more robust and is is preferable.

Ideally the sound should be taken from the DVD player via digital coax or optical cable to the input of an amplifier/receiver and from there to the surround speakers. If you are going direct from the DVD player to the TV, you only have stereo sound at best, so connect the red/white RCA output jacks on the DVD player to the auxilliary input jacks on the TV.

Regarding upconversion over component, see the link below for a thread on this topic. At least in some cases you can use component. However, since upconversion works best over digital (DVI or HDMI) -- otherwise you suffer degredation due to analog-digital and digital-analog conversion -- you would be advised to avoid it even if technically feasible. It also doesn't address the audio issue since component is only video.

Hope this helps.
