I was told this basically makes both an "8 legged horse" so betting on one or the other can make you win when one comes in. So I was wondering what happens when you bet a trifecta for example but you only picked one of the horses (1A) to win and one 1A comes in first and 1 comes in second. (Sorry this question makes no sense to probably. This was at Hollywood Park I dont know if other tracks do this)

if the race came in 1A - 1 - 6 - 3...the trifecta would be 1,6,3

In a race with entries "1" and a "1a", this only means that a trainer has two horses, in the same race.
((an eight legged horse??))

But if you pick the 1 horse in a double header bet, a quinella or trifecta bet, and either horse 1or 1a is in the money, you win!!
I hope this helps, it's really simple!
Just look in your program at the races for confirmation of this.

This is called a "couple" or "entry" ; very common in all American tracks. If both horses complete a triple (trifecta), then the top 4 horses are considered for payout.
