As an example, say I believe in Jesus, but not the rest of the bible, would I still get to go to heaven? Or is there more to it - like do I have to follow all the other rules and traditions?

Faith without love is dead. Faith and love are inseparable. It is impossible to have true faith, and not have love. They flow from the grace of God.

There is only one Church that has been given the authority to make rules, and Traditions are practices and beliefs that were handed down from the Apostles. St. Paul commands us to obey these traditions. They predate the bible and most Christians don't know what they are, or reject them altogether.

Faith/belief in Jesus is it. Many will say Baptism is required but you can be Baptised by the Spirit of GOd with out being doused in water.

If you have the faith Start the relationship with Jesus, talking and listening as if talking to your best friend. Jesus will guide you from there as to what is right for you.

I was going to have my upper ear perieced to show my servitude to Christ. Jesus instead talked me into buying a Christian ring and placing it on my left ring finger identifying my marriage to Christ. BTW it went on and has never come off because it can't. It is much too small to fit over the knuckle. Only God could do that.

It sounds like you may not believe in the bible, but I want to share something with you from the bible that may help answer your question.

1John.4
[1] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
[2] Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

This verse implies that you have to be of the right spirit to be of God, and the spirit has to be tried for one to be sure it is of God.

This says that the SPIRIT has to confess "Jesus Christ IS come in the flesh". I emphasize IS because it does not say "did come" but IS come. If you look up this word in the Greek, it specifically says "use only in the present". I repeat because this is very important. "is" is used for "only in the present". This means that the original Greek word was meant to be used in the present tense.

I have heard so many Christians quote this verse thinking that you have to believe something about some kind of "history" that happened 2000 years ago. This is not so. You do not have to believe any thing about anyone 2000 years ago. And simply saying that you believe in Jesus means nothing, or saying that I believe that Jesus the son of God came in the flesh 2000 years ago means nothing. What kind of God would expect you to believe on something from the doctrine of man that teaches about some guy 2000 years ago? In fact this verse is also warning you about the false prophets who are teaching you this very thing.

The passage means that your spirit has to confess, Jesus is come, is come in the flesh, is come in my flesh. That is the only way you can know that the spirit is of God. This is the only way this verse makes sense and actually works. Those that do not believe this can confess all they want about some historical Jesus being real and in the flesh, but this does nothing for salvation.

In James we find that even the demons believe in Jesus Christ. You must accept Him as your savior. You must believe that He was born, lived and was crucified, but on the third day, He defeated satan, sin and evil to atone for your sins. As for other rules and traditions, the Bible is clear that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life! ONLY through Him will you be saved. Hope this helps.

Once again the word is believe. We have faith and then we believe because we give ourselves to Jesus. This is some thing while unmerited favor, gets you in. Would you go to a club and just stand around and not dance, not listen to the music. Probably not. Belief (true Belief) is not abstract, it produces action. So if you truly have faith you will want to do the dance.

Christians will tell you that it's your belief and not your acts. Jesus says in Matthew 5:17-19 that you are to follow ALL of the old testament law and that to teach differently makes you lowest in the kingdom of heaven... Just in case you feel you can slide by on belief alone Jesus added

matthew 5:20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Seems pretty clear... I don't know why Christians don't like it though... they always try to trump it with Corinthians or Romans... like the word of Paul can trump Jesus?

Anyway, Jesus says if you aren't a Kosher Christian the bible says your going to hell.

To get to heaven, you have to accept Jesus as your lord and savior. That means believing and following what he said, and choosing to serve him by telling others about God. You just have to accept him. If you accept him, you will believe all the stuff in the bible. God Bless.

How can you believe in someone and not believe what they say?
To put it as the Bible puts it, you are a slave to whomever you obey. If you do not obey Christ, He is not your Lord, and if He is not your lord, than you are not saved nor going to heaven.

Roman 6:16 "Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness."

You should always have faith, no matter what you're religion. No matter what, God will always forgive you, if you ask for forgiveness. It's like this: say I murdered somebody. I ask for God's forgiveness, and I mean it, He will forgive me. All you have to do is believe. Plus, to believe in Jesus Christ, you HAVE to believe in the bible.
