The manufacturer assumes you are going to be eating the cake you have iced within a short period of time. The left over icing, though, is another matter. Unless you make cakes several times a week the icing might be around for quite a while. As you wouldn't leave butter out for days on end, you won't want to leave your icing out indefinitely.

refrigerate after opening, to reuse frosting, leave out for 30min, or more to make frosting easy to spread.
