I started having heartburn about 4 days ago, and it comes and goes everyday. I noticed it comes especially when I have chocolate. It burns so bad in my throat. I have tried tums, rolaids, and Zantac 75, but it doesn't really work. Sometimes milk helps, but not everytime. What could be causing this to happen suddenly? Also, yesterday I didn't have any at all until I took my Zoloft at 11 p.m. last night. As soon as I swallowed it, the heartburn started. I have been taking Zoloft for years, so I know it doesn't have anything to do with that. Any idea's? I am NOT pregnant.

Since you are not finding relief with the regular therapy with Zantac and Tums, the problem seem to be in the gall bladder. Vicky is right. You must get your gall bladder scanned by ultrasound to see whether you have any gall stones, as that seems to be the cause. In earlier times the gall bladder stones were detected in females of over forty but now they are being seen in early ages also (but 25 is too young for this problem).

Heartburn could be indicative of some kind of digestive disorder, such as esophageal acid reflux disease or ulcers. See your doctor for tests to determine the cause if it continues or gets worse. Meanwhile, don't eat chocolate as that seems to trigger heartburn. Same goes for peppermint, spicy or acid foods. Don't lie down directly after eating, and in fact, if it bothers you a lot at night, use two pillows to elevate your head and that keeps the acid from your esophagus while you're sleeping.

Oh, you're in the same boat I am. When I complained to my lousy doc about heartburn I'd had for over 10 years, they checked and found a gallstone and yanked it. That should clear it up they said. Oh no, it got worse! So I was on Aciphex, the only thing that worked. Then my ins co dropped Aciphex of their coverage list. So I'm surving on OTC Pepcid and Maalox. And a friend of mine had the exact same thing happen when she had her gallbladder out.

Beg your doc for anything else. Bile is just dumping straight into our stomachs now and that's no good.

Go to the Dr and have your gall bladder checked out - prolonged heartburn could be gall stones or an infected gall bladder. I suffered similar problems in the past and tried all the antacids before being rushed to emergency surgury for a severlly infected gall bladder (it was removed). Are you seeing your eyes or skin tone changing color, becoming yellowish? If so, run don't walk to your Dr. The gall bladder when not functioning properly can poison your entire body.

I'm sorry, I'm still having a hard time getting past the fact that you are 25 and still saying "tummy ache". I almost want to say "ahhh come here wittle bunny wunny, wet me kiss a boo boo" But that would be totally inappropriate and condescending given the circumstances.

I think you have acid reflux disease. My dad has something similar. Something that really helped him was propping his bed so he could sleep on sort of an incline. The doctor said what he has is a hiatal hernia.
