Yes you can study the core ones first and then do the Specialist Course and individual Office Applications. I have just done Microsoft Word Expert. There are many sites offering courses on this www.microsoft.com/Learning. Good luck on your search on this. ☺

Here are some more websites that I hope help you:

http://www.measureup.com/catalog/path.aspx?vid=5

http://www.elearners.com/courses/microsoft.htm?tsource=gg&tid=6255

http://www.adelaide.edu.au/its/training/ms_cert/ms_courses/

If I can give you some advise try taking and passing each microsoft specialist test you can. That looks good on resumes and at your jobs.

These courses are setup so that you will be able to pass and become a specialist in certain Microsoft Software’s. They vary on topic as you can take a course for one specific piece of software or an entire suite of software. I believe the courses are useful if you will be looking to get hired in a training position. Having a certification in the software you will be training will allow you to ask for higher compensation for your time. If you do not plan on training others to work with the software, the knowledge is good to have, but the certification is not actually needed except to make yourself feel better. There may be other areas in business where certification may be useful. Microsoft also has higher certifications available as well.

Check out http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/de... to learn more about it.

Also, taking the course does not make you certified. You will still have to pay for, take, and pass the certification exam.
