I found out that my parent has a credit card in my name. I didn't even know about it until I got the first bill. I was shocked by this and knew that it was my parent that could've done this. I was right and now I'm angry and upset because I can't pay it and they can't pay it either. It's been about 4 months since I found out and I don't know what to do. I've called the company to cancel the card but I haven't reported my parent. I don't really want to go to the company to report as fraud because I don't want this person to go to jail and if I report it as not knowing who did it they will figure out it was my parent. I need help. What would you do? Will my parent go to jail if I report to the credit card company?

Due to someone taking out a credit card in your name and not paying it off, your credit score has gone down the drain. You will never be able to get a loan. This means that you can't ever buy a house...car....or get a student loan to go to University.

In my opinion, report them to the credit card company. They are supposed to be your parents, and that means ensuring that they watch out for you enough so that you can take care of yourself later on in life.
They have failed to do that. Thier selfishness is now directly hampering your ability to be successful in life.

Bottom Line: Report them.

I don't think that they'll have to go to jail. If they were using the card solely to support you and any other children they have, they will just have to pay huge fines. They have to deal with the consequences bud...it's the only way.

Tell them it was not you who signed up for the account and then the burden of proof is on the CC company to prove it was you. They will do an investigation and more than likely find out it was your parent(s).

I think that is a scummy thing they did to you and they deserve to get in trouble. They proved to you they could not be trusted and it's their job to ensure your well-being. If you can't trust your parents, how can you trust anyone else? They are suppose to be the people you go to when all else fails - and they just proved they are no better than criminals and abused a basic human .

I understand you love them, but if they don't face this issue, how many more cards are they going to take out in your name? When will it end? At least if they are in jail, it's less of a risk if will happen again. And prison stores don't take credit cards, only cash.

Tell the credit card company you never applied for the credit card. You don't have to tell them who you think did it. Credit theft happens all the time. You need to keep your credit in good condition so if they know its fraud they will note that on your credit report. Make sure the card is cancelled. Let your folks know if another bill comes to you from another company you will have to report them. I doubt seriously they will do it again with that threat.

Close the account first of all. Try going to your parents and telling them, you expect the bill paid for in full, and if they pull this again, you will report them to the law for ID theft.

This is a tough situation you are in, your parents may go to jail if you report them, they may not. What it will do is ruin your credit for a very long time if you do not get the bill settled. See if you state offers a "freeze" on applying for credit. What this does is not allow others to achieve credit in your name, without you knowing about it.

Best of luck!

If you report the fraud, the credit card company will go after their money - meaning they will do whatever is necessary to get it from your parent.

If you do not report the fraud, you'll be responsible for paying the bill.

Personally, I don't put up with criminal activity. It makes the criminal think that they can just repeat the crime over and over again.

What i say might not sit well with you but oh well... I understand that you can not pay the card nor can your parents but i am sure you and your parents can come up with a plan to pay it in time.
I am sure the CC company will be understanding.
Report your parent for money?! I am sorry to say but in my books that is at least outrageous.
How much do they owe you? 2 k? 10k? 50 k? i am sure that raising you took way more money than that. I am not saying that what they did is right not at all all i am saying is that maybe they are old and they needed the money. I am sure you also have financial needs but here's a saying that you have to remember ' don't bite the hand that fed you'.
Of course i do not know the dynamic of your relationship with your parents so i am just going on the assumption that you have a normal relationship.
So here is my solution : Talk to your parents try to make them understand that what they did is not OK, in fact it is illegal and ask them to come up with the best plan they can to help you pay it back.Make it their responsibility to negotiate with the CC company ( payment options)

Best of luck,

Alex

I understand you don't to report them but hi look at it the other way suppose it was you who did it I am sure they would report you in a heartbeat. The main thing is it is still fraud and it comes in ll shape and form family or family not, because in the long run its your credit that's getting screwed up. Best of luck!!

If you love your parents DO NOT report it. A friend of mine stole from her mother. The mother didnt realize that the thief was her daughter and reported it. It was a federal crime so the FBI investigated it. When the mom found out it was her daughter she wanted the charges dropped. THE FBI DOES NOT DROP CHARGES.

My friend was facing years in prison when she killed herself. She left a young son behind.
Please go talk to your parents and tell them how much trouble they will be in. And if you love them at all you will find a way to work this out. If you report it they WILL spend time in a federal prison as what they did was a federal crime.

Report them, the bank will ask them for repayment, and if they fail to repay, then they will take civil action.
