About three weeks ago, I noticed a hard, round, lump near the center of my chest where the clavicle meets the sternum. It's about 2cm+ in diameter, has a smooth surface, seems to be oval in shape (almost round like a circle), is painless, and is not moveable.

It's in an awkward position: half on the actual clavicle bone and half below it. It is very close to the center of my chest, but a little bit to the right. There is no similar lump anywhere else.

About a month ago, I noticed a pain there, but there was no lump there at the time.

Within the past three weeks, it has not grown nor shrunken.

My doctor checked it out and he's not too concerned about it. He thinks that it may be inflammation turned hard and painless. An x-ray revealed nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this may be?

PLEASE keep on top of your doctors until you get the answers you need. Most likely it is nothing. But, it needs a biopsy [fine needle aspiration]. I started out exactly the same way [except on my left side]. No one knew what it was until they cut into it to find out. And, oh by the way, it was Lymphoma. I'm not trying to scare you. If it is something bad, you can beat it with treatment. There are great treatments out there. I'm 2 years post-treatment.
Best wishes

Get a second opinion! Your life may depend upon it.

I'm sorry if this scares you but any lump or bump should not be shrugged off. If anything it should be biopsied or removed as soon as possible. The sad fact is that family physicians often do not recognize cancer (especially sarcoma). There is always the chance that he has misdiagnosed you. Do NOT wait.

I know so many people who have gone to a family physician and been told the same thing only to have the lump turn out to be cancerous. It is better to be overly cautious and insist on removal. One little tumor or lump is easier to treat whether it is benign or cancer when it is small and in one location.

Good luck.

I don't know what it is or may be, but if you aren't happy with your dr. conclusion, either get a second opinion or tell your dr you want it removed. Dr. typically won't do anything they don't have to. Whether or not you do, tell him it it is getting painfull and/or discomforting. Your doc is there for you, not you there for him. Make him run labs, ct scan or anything else you can think of. At least tell him you want it removed. It may make his job more difficult, but if he wanted an easy job, he should have went to McDonalds. It's only a job to him, but it's your health and life.

I would definitely have it removed for biopsy. Cancer is not mobile by manipulation. And insist on an ultrasound. as it will show more than an Xray.
