The origin of AIDS and HIV has puzzled scientists ever since the illness first came to light in the early 1980s. For over twenty years it has been the subject of fierce debate and the cause of countless arguments, with everything from a promiscuous flight attendant to a suspect vaccine programme being blamed. So what it the truth? Just where did AIDS come from?

The first recognised cases of AIDS occurred in the USA in the early 1980s (more about this period can be found on our history page). A number of gay men in New York and San Francisco suddenly began to develop rare opportunistic infections and cancers that seemed stubbornly resistant to any treatment. At this time, AIDS did not yet have a name, but it quickly became obvious that all the men were suffering from a common syndrome. The discovery of HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus that causes AIDS was made soon after. While some were initially resistant to the connection (and indeed remain so today), there is now clear evidence to prove that HIV does cause AIDS. So, in order to find the source of AIDS, it is necessary to look for the origin of HIV, and find out How, When and Where HIV first began to cause disease in humans.

No. AIDS ( Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a mutant virus. It first started in African monkeys(not sure which breed). Somehow it evolved - mutated- and successfully crossed the human/ animal immunity barrier. Diseases such as polio, anthrax, bubonic plague, rabies , bovine spongiform encephalopathy, influenza and AIDS have all done this over time but only the latter two have done it within the last century.

It's pretty disgusting, but HIV came from a person in the African outback getting it on with a monkey and then contracting a virus from that union which he then spread to other people. It took off fast and furious, what they didnt know was the virus, once gotten hold of the immune system, destroyed it and thus AIDS was the result.

Aids come from either Homosexuals or people who sleep around with a whole bunch of people. It didn't come from a laboratory but from people not being able to control themselves. Even animals have it sometimes.

the AIDS virus (HIV) has been linked to primates in the African jungles. It was largely harmless while being carried by monkeys, but it somehow transferred itself to humans and became incredibly dangerous. (Nobody is certian where, when, or how this transfer took place)

It first appeared in Africa and was quite rapidly spread around the world from there. It is so magnified today mainly due to the many "gay bars" so to speak, which spread the disease like crazy.
