I have been doing a lot of research and have come up with answers that diverge so dramatically, I'm really not sure what to think. For example, if I followed the label instructions from Wellness, the calculation comes out to 560 Calories/day for a 6 month old kitten. When I use info from reliable web sources, I get anything from 212 Cals/day to 350 Cals/day. I'm trying to feed my kittens the right amount of food, and now I'm just very unsure as to what exactly that is.

I would appreciate info on the caloric intake for kittens aged 4 through 8 months, who are both, as you can imagine, very active.

The background behind the question is that one kitten eats the others' food, and that the vet has said they are slightly overweight. After thorough research, I have already made the decision to feed them 2-3 times a day and serve primarily wet food. I am only interested in the caloric intake and not in any advice regarding their feeding schedule and/or type of food.

Growing children and growing pets need all the calories they can get, from high quality food, to make strong healthy adults.

The information on the side of the can, and on web sites are averages. They make no distinction for individuality. If nothing else, domestic cats are individuals, and, if they are not purebred kittens, you have no way of knowing what they should weigh as adults.

If your cat did not come from a place where they breed cats for sale, you cannot possibly know what type of breed was in its background. There is a great deal of difference in required caloric need between a tiny oriental breed and a Maine Coon cat.

There are a lot more important things to concern yourself about with two kittens, like playing and bonding with them. Exercise is a good beginning to weight control as an adult.

I have a grandson, who is in sixth grade and is 5 ft. 7 in. already. He certainly requires more calories than some of his classmates, who barely come up to his shoulders. Of course, his father is 6 ft. 4" tall, so that was to be expected. Just an example of transferring kitty concerns to something a human could better wrap its mind around.

Don't worry about calories for a kitten.....give it a good brand kitten food. On that states it has all the nutrition for a healthy growth and let it eat it's fill.
Kittens are growing cats and know when they had enough. give it plenty of food and it will self adjust it's eating habits. Calorie worries are for OLD cats,SICK cats and People. : )

I've had pets all my life (48 years). Calories have never been an issue because my cats and dogs (when I have dogs) get fed FREE CHOICE.

They have always been extremely healthy and happy pets.

If I were you I'd simply free choice feed them a GOOD quality dry food (I've used Purina ONLY for all my life with GREAT results!) and concentrate more iimportant things like deworming (NOW), immunizations (as the vet deems necessary) and *spaying/neutering* (when they become 6 months old)!!!

If you buy kitten food (specifically for growing kittens) in the pet food aisle, it says how much you give them on the bag/box.
