We have an eleven week old puppy who is in the recovery stages (thank God!) of Parvo. He is probably coming home in the next 3-4 days (unless God forbid he relapses). We are cleaning the grass, porch, deck, kitchen floor, etc. with the bleach solution. I am also bleaching the blankets, etc. My only concern is the hardwood floors I have throughout my home (except the kitchen). I don't think I can bleach them - is there anything else I can use to kill the parvo?

Also - is there any chance that the dog can catch it again within it's environment? We only had him for two days prior to him getting Parvo. He was a rescue pup AND HADN'T BEEN VACCINATED!!

Also, any suggestions about diet? I am going to have him on boiled chicken, rice, some liver (apparently absorbs toxins). I have heard some suggestions about probiotic yogurt, but I am concerned that dairy products may be hard on his system.

Any help/input would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats! First your puppy is now immune to Parvo virus as his body has made the proper immunities. He still needs vacs for the other viruses and diseases. The yard will have the virus for at least 6 months no matter how much bleach you pour on it! So no other puppies should come either.

You can use a diluted bleach mixture like you used on everything else for the wood floors, just be sure to dry them afterword. 31 parts water to 1 part bleach. The incubation for Parvo is 7-8 days after exposure. So the pup had it before coming to you.

Last is diet. The yogurt is used to replace the good bacteria into his gut which has been totally eliminated! Only a tablespoon a day usually does the trick. Your vet can also order something called FortiFlora. We use it on every Parvo, digestion, or intestinal problem.

I would recommend the best food you can afford, this is not Science Diet, Iams, Purina, etc... see below for website on good foods.

There's a cleanser that we used to use when I worked at an animal shelter that killed parvo. I beleive it was called Orangequat or Lemonquat (some sort of citrus fruit). It actually smelled really nice, and I'm thinking it would be ok on hardwood floor. You also might ask your vet to recommend something...he or she will probably know what would be safe on hardwood floors.

Your pup shouldn't catch parvo again since he's already had (and survived...congratulations!) the virus. It's still important to make sure everything is disinfected, because any other dog who comes into your house with no vaccinations or a weak immune system can get parvo. The virus can survive for a very long time.

As for diet, it's probably best to follow whatever recommendations your vet makes, and discuss any other foods with the vet before feeding it to the dog.

I think you already have a lot good good answers,. One thing I should add though. It IS possible for a dog to be re-infected with Parvo again so your pup will need to get Parvo boosters when he gets the other boosters.See the answer to the this question about Parvo. It's from a vet, and I hope that she doesn't mind my linking to her response.

I'm happy to hear that your pup is on the road to recovery. Best of luck to you both :-)

By choosing to leave your pup at the vet it's chance of survival is pretty high. It is however something that your pup has to fight off itself. The survival rate for parvo isn't too bad and it sounds like you caught it kind of early. You can make a bleach solution that you can spray areas with and wash anything that she may have been in contact with (like a dog bed). Best of luck.

When your puppy is fully recovered from Parvo, it should have immunity. But you wouldn't want to have other puppies over for a few months. Regarding your hardwood floors, you might just clean them as you would normally do because your puppy can't get re-infected. It sounds like you already have some good advice about what to feed your dog. My understanding is that offering some of the things you have written about in small amounts is good. If the puppy is ravenous, don't allow her to over eat. Yogurt is different from regular milk, but I would probably offer the other things you suggested first. Your Vet should give your recommendations regarding diet.

I just had to say
thank you for taking care of this pup
sometimes it sure seems rescue pups have more than their share of grief
a lesser person would've dumped him back at the shelter

sorry no idea
other than the bleach solution

googling found
"add 1 oz. chlorine bleach to 1 gallon water for inanimate surfaces." the site follows

oh and supposedly survivors are permanently immune

I lost a pup when I was a teen
took me almost a year to finally pay off the vet
