It is called Corporeal Acts of Mercy.
Acts of mercy includes both corporeal and spiritual. They are ways in which Christians give out of their own abundance to meet another's needs.
There are seven corporeal acts of mercy: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to harbor the harborless, to visit the sick, to ransom the captive, and to bury the dead.
There are also seven spiritual acts of mercy: prayer, doctrine, counsel, solace, correction, remission, and support.

I think it's the reflection on the time and the location when and where Christianity was made popular... in the middle east, and poor and violent times. They were in a hot desert where water was scarce, the poor were naked, and rebels imprisoned.
As most of the reading material related to Christianity related to those times and location, the modern christian church just recited from the religious history books.

Dear shotokan,

First, I do not belong to any church because the church age ended in 1988 and God has commanded ALL true believers to leave their local congregations and churches, which have become Babylon.
The items your question touches on are found in Matthew 25:31-46. Let me explain that these works that are mention here are NOT physical works! They all refer to giving the true Gospel. Natural (unsaved) man is blind to the true meaning of Scripture. Feeding the hungry means to give them the bread of life-Jesus Christ. The Lord said in Jon 6:48 that He is the bread of life. In Isaiah 61:10 the Lord tells us that we must be clothed with Christ's righteousness to cover our nakedness. In John 4 the declares that He is the living water that if a man drink of, he'll never thirst. As far as prison is concerned, ALL men are prisoners of sin and satan until the Lord Jesus Christ makes them free. "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

Corporeal acts of mercy.

Traditionally, there were seven corporeal acts of mercy: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to harbor the harborless, to visit the sick, to ransom the captive, and to bury the dead.

There were also seven spiritual acts of mercy: prayer, doctrine, counsel, solace, correction, remission, and support (they are sometimes given different names, depending on how the Latin is translated).

The idea is this. Acts of mercy, or almsdeeds, are ways in which we give out of our own abundance to meet another's needs. The seven corporeal works of mercy are the more famous set, but we clearly have spiritual needs, too, and these are, in fact, more important. Because of this, the spiritual acts of mercy are more important than the corporeal ones. (In some cases, of course, the corporeal need is more immediate: a starving man may need advice or rebuke, but in general you should feed him first.) The most important spiritual need is for help from God; and thus the most important spiritual almsgiving is the gift of prayer.

I don't know what churches call it, but these are acts of kindness known as charity. Acts like these are part of the grand commandment given by Jesus: "You must love God with your whole heart, soul and mind and you must LOVE YOUR YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOUR SELF".

the bible says when it is in the power of your hand to do it. when you come across some one in need and you are able to do so then do it.let god be your guide at all times. his word states the way we should act and live. we really need wisdom in all matters. he does not fault us for something we are not sure of .herlping others brings his blessings to us. he said in his word to give and it would be given back to you.its like planting a seed. when you plant you get a harvest back . give and it shall be given. its a plan of be blessed back.

Good works which are NOT a means of grace, just a tool that aids in our sanctification. Be sure you are asking the complete question.
