Terriers in general are very intelligent and I've never heard of an owner of a Yorkie who doesn't love their dog. In face, most Yorkie owners I've met become so attached to the breed that it's the only kind of dog they'll get. The only drawbacks I can think of is that they require quite a bit of grooming to prevent their hair from matting and they're pretty yappy dogs. Also, if you live in a rural area or somewhere with coyotes, you'll want to be sure and keep your dog from becoming a snack for larger predators (including birds of prey).

A quick example of how intelligent Yorkies can be: My sister's roommate never housetrained her Yorkie. My sister was petsitting and brought the dog to my parents house. It got along great with my parent's dog, and learned to go to the bathroom outside just from seeing my parent's dog do it.

If you are seriously considering a Yorkie, be sure to find a reputable breeder who will guarantee the health of the animal and who can give you background on the parent dog. Yorkies (like any small dogs) who have been improperly bred can have all kinds of health problems, and you want to be sure that your pet will live a long and happy life. You'll probably have to pay a little more, but it's worth it to have a healthy dog.

Yorkie's are the best dog ever!

They are very loyal, great for those w/ allergies because they don't shed, they love to play, and are small enough to travel with or to sleep on the bed.

The downside I have found to yorkies is that some of them bark a lot... no matter what, and some of them dislike children - a LOT. My theory on this is that yorkies are used to being spoiled, and children seem to treat them rough. Also, they get a little jealous of people taking the attention of their owner away from the yorkie.

I think toy yorkies are great because they are smaller (obviously) than the bigger ones. Purebred yorkies start off a black/dark brown color, and most turn a tan or silver/grey color as adults.

I would never buy another dog after seeing how wonderful and brilliant my yorkies are. I agree with the earlier post about pet stores.... I heard somewhere that pet stores get the less desirable dogs :( while the breeders save the best to sell themselves (often for less).

I had a Yorkie for about 10 years and he was the best (named Rambo). Two things to keep in mind: although they are small, they can be very hyper and noisy. I would have to take him out for two long walks everyday just to keep him happy. He also barked and howled a lot - but it could be because he was a little territorial as a male dog. If you're looking for a mellow dog, try a Shih Tzu (it's what I have now and he's a perfect little lap dog).
Second, you must keep up on their grooming or have the funds to pay for professional grooming about once a month. They have long hair that grows like human hair, so you have to keep it trimmed or brush and manage it every day. While Yorkies don't shed, that long hair can be a pain.

Overall, my dog was so loving and fun that it was worth all the troubles.

Good luck!

I have one and I couldnt ask for a better dog.
Yorkies never shed, are fun, small, intelligent but are pretty high maitenance. They need to be daily groomed and are hard to potty train. Bottom line is that the positives are MUCH more than the few negatives so overall it is one awesome breed.

Good luck in your search.

i hav a yorkie. they are sooo cute, especially the gurls. they are verry smart and energetic. Very picky when it comes to food. they will whine and beg for human food but once u fall for it, they wont eat their dog food at all. they need alot of attention but they also need there own space at times. they need a bath every week for their long coats. my puppie yorkie always gets gum stuk in her beard for som reason.also, they are small and hard to find!my yorkie ran away a few times and miraculasly, we ofund her under our van in the ally. wwat i lov about them is that they dont shead at all which is really conveinent. I'v had 3 other different kinds of dogs and i had to giv them all away. 1, becuz the yorkie and them got into huge fights and 2 cuz they shed, and hav no respect. yorkies are the best dogs ever!

terriers are bred to hunt and kill
yorkies were bred to kill rodents so they will like to dig and destroy if you dont keep them mentally happy
Obedience lessons are often neglected from small dogs but is very important.. dont spoil a small dog

NEVER NEVER buy from a pet store - you will pay too much for a low quality pup
