I always use either all butter or half butter and half shortening. Turns out great.

yes, but you cannot just make a substitution in a recipe. AS one person mention just substituting butter for shorting will effect the texture of the biscuit. However, you can get just as fluffy biscuits using butter, it all depends on the ratio of other ingredients that you use. Also I think that butter gives the biscuits a much better flavor.

Check out foodnetwork.com, which has tons of recipes for biscuits, including recipes that just use butter.

The short answer is "yes". I learned to make biscuits without using a recipe, so I can't give you specifics, but mine were made with self-rising flour, margerine and milk.

Yes you can, they'll have a different taste thats all. More buttery if any thing. I also use a generic butter flavored shorting and that works well too.

I've never tried it, but I don't think so - you need the shortening to make them fluffy.....
