There are many breeds, and make great guard dogs.
Yuo have ot get the right breed for you. Someof them stink to high heaven no mater what you do.
Usually they will protect the entire family but becoem attached to one person ..
If they are guard dogs it's best ot not let everyone become close to the animal.
These dogs are a damgerious breed and it's not uncommon for them to attack their owners at any time.

They're awesome dogs! They're very intelligent.Mine both have wonderful senses of humor. They play tricks on and hide from each other. They're very protective of their property and owners. They do however shed an awful lot so need regular grooming. They are mistrustful by nature so should be introduced to strangers carefully and they need an awful lot of exercise DAILY.
If you have the time to put into training, grooming and at least a 3 mile run on top of the several romps in the yard during the day you'll have a dog that's happy, healthy and totally devoted to you.

Do you mean German shepherds?
They are great dogs in the right hands with an owner who is around most of the time and dedicated to plenty of excersize and training.
I fostered one for a while but this was not the right sort of permanent home for him.

do you have experience with any dog breed?
if not I wouldn't take on any of the larger breeds
contact someone locally
possibly your local vet or shelter
ask if they have someone who could talk to you
find out what your needs/life style are like
and help you find the dog for you
