I'm not sure how old your dog is but I would go outside everytime your dog does. When ever you catch him digging in the yard scold him and say no dig in the yard! then when he stops give him a toy, treat or praise. Keep it up. And after a few days let him go outside by himself. He may start digging rite away since he knows you arent out there with him. The trick is watch him from a window or keep the door cracked so you can run out and scold him, which should surprise him. Keep doing this and eventually he will stop since he knows he will get caught every time.

First off a dog shouldn't be off of a hand held lead. Some places require you to sign an agreement stating you will never have your dog off of a lead while it is outdoors. Because of local stray animals some towns and cities have created laws that you must do the same. Second get your dog a body harness if you haven't already, that will keep your pet from choking if it ever tries to pull away, like when walking too fast to go to another person or overly exited. the pressure is taken away from the neck and distributed all through the front of the body, its much more humane. Our dog sleeps comfortably in her's. Now get yourself an empty pop can and fill it with a dozen pennies and when it starts to dig get close to its back and give it one quick noise making shake while saying strong and firm no! No!. It will eventually get the idea of what will happen. You never want to strike a pet with your hand, it fosters mistrust and fear that you can't explain with words.

A much more effective approach to the problem is to address the cause of the digging. Here's advice on how to figure out why your dog digs—and how to stop it:

There are several options.
1-every time you catch him/her digging whip him woith a small limb or switch about the legs and nose. nothing serious but to let him/her know diggng will notbe tolerated. They'l learn.
2-tie the dog to the spot where is digging a few days straight. with something smelly in the hole, than cover it up and stick his poop in the hole than stick his nose in it.
3- Get some lime or something which will irritate him if he digs there . household amonia will also work.
4-fill a partially dug hole with his own poop and soon he'll stop.
5-Buy something which irritates him/her and spray they everytime they dig. but of all of these using a switch on his legs and nose help best.

If the dog is digging in a specific spot like mine, you can put chicken wire down and then cover it with dirt. My dog finally gave up in that area ... has not yet moved to a new one either - he he!

I call it craptonite....yep, fill the holes in with your dog's own POO. Especially if he keeps digging in the same places. Dogs hate to dig up their own poop and after finding out that all holes are filled with poo he will eventually give up his bad habit. I have trained several dogs this way with good success.

Everytime your dog digs in the yard u say "BAD DOG!!!!" OR "BAD GIRL!!!!" OR "BAD BOY".Then try not to do it too hard, but slap him or her.Dogs can deal with many scals, but they will still love u!!Everytime your dog does it then do the same thing till he or she stops. If that does'nt work then take him or her for walks most of the time.
