I am 21 and I've developed quite a crush on a 16 year old girl. I realize that doing anything about this crush is not exactly proper, because of the nature of our age difference.
Truth is though, she is just so adorable, I can't stop thinking about her, and I find myself flirting/wanting to flirt with her. Is this okay as long as I don't take it any further, or should I "cease and desist" in the interests of propriety?

I'd just like to underline that I realize a realtionship with this girl is NOT a good idea, but is just flirting really so harmful?

I would leave it alone. Her parent's won't think of it the same way you do if and when they find out about you. And I would think you would be asking for trouble if you kept on with this. If you still feel the same way about her when she's 18...and LEGAL....go for it. Until then, date women that are legal and will keep you out of jail.

I think it would depend very much of the size of the age gap as to whether people would find it disgusting. Girls have been branded 'gold diggers' in the past when they have married much older men and, likewise, those men have been branded 'dirty old men'. This is not necessarily true of these people but it is how these matches are perceived by most of society. Most girls seem to like to have a boyfriend about 4 or 5 years older than themselves and that is wise when young, because boys mature a few years later than girls. An 18 year old boy is still a child in many respects but an 18 year old 'girl' is a young woman. However, because women mainly live longer than men it can be a good thing for the woman to be older by a few years and, when couples marry a little later in life this is often the situation. I personally do not like to see a huge age gap, especially when it is the woman who is the older, but that is just my feeling. Ideally though I think is just has to be up to the individual couple. Some get on better with people their own age whilst others prefer a small or even large age gap. Each to his own, as they say.

Well, you don't seem to be a bad guy. I had a 16 year old girlfriend when I was 20, but that was 32 years ago and it wasn't really frowned on back then. It's different today. But, like I said, you seem to have good intentions. I think the best thing you can do is clear it with her parents before it goes any further.

No it is not ok. Stop flirting with her. Even if u dont plan on doing anything with her by u flirting with her and thinking about her that way u are entertaining the idea of u guys being together. It is immoral. U are a grown man she is still young. Find someone ur own age. I say cease and desist. Trust me dont temp urself! U dont want to end up in prison...she is still young if u make one false move that shes not comfortable with ur dead.

i'd say there is no sence in flirting if it's to be taken no further. And I think you better find someone a little older ...say at least 18. She will have more in common with you and be more mature. A 16 year old is still a baby.

First of all, how does this girl thats 16 feel about you! I would say talking, being with her and flirting is all fine, but your older and should be thinking at all times about what could happen if it was taken further, expecially when her parents are going to get involved as u know they will! you should really find out her feelings towards you.

Forget propriety, there are legal issues at stake. You should cease and desist on this

I think you already know the answer to this question, or you wouldn't be asking it here. The fact that you think she's "so adorable" is beside the point. Stop thinking of yourself and your need to flirt.

If you continue, one thing is likely to lead to another, and bad stuff could happen. Don't tempt fate. Back away slowly, and run.

I see nothing harmful in flirting but don't let it go further than that. It's okay to have a crush on her, as you can't control the feelings you have towards certain people. But don't let it go past playful joking and teasing. Be careful and don't let yourself or her get hurt, just keep it friendly and flirtatious.
