I have a son who's going to be 3 years old on December 21st. With all of the excitement of Christmas going on in my home, how can I make his birthday truly special without confusing him? And what's the best way to handle it as he gets older?

My best friend and my boyfriend both have dec 21st birthdays, it's hard for kids but now that they've grown up they understand the financial weight Christmas puts on people.

My son's birthday is on the 19th of December. What I did is go out and get everything I wanted for him to have, then I just take one or two out for birthday. But he is 20 now, so I give him really expensive stuff for both. For instance he plays guitar, so I gave him $600 gift certificate for a local guitar store and told him it was for birthday and christmas. I just told him before hand that what he was getting was going to be for both and just asked him which one he wanted to get it at. Once they get older that way is easier.

Keep them TOTALLY separate because they are. My daughter's birthday is Decemeber 30th and we've always taken great pains to do that. NEVER combine gifts such as giving one larger more expensive item and telling them, "this is for your birthday AND for Christmas". don't cheap out and wrap their b-day gifts with Christmas wrap or in Christmas boxes. Don't place his birthday gifts anywhere near the tree. Kids who have birthdays around Christmas often feel cheated because many people combine the two and they don't get any special recognition on their special day. I always make it a point as we lead up to her birthday to mention to her that I can't believe how old she is getting, how responsible she is and I really focus on her. Our tradition has always been to let our kids pick a restaurant of their choosing for their special day and we whoop it up big time. As long as you keep them separate, he'll be fine.

I have a 4 year old son who's birthday is on December 20th and every year on his birthday, we designate that day for his Birthday only by throwing a little party for him. Make sure everyone else knows that it is his "DAY". Hope this help. This year for my son's birthday we will probably take him to Chuckee Cheese.

we grew up with this problem. from the time carol was two her birthday was on the 4th of July. this went on until she was in high school and she changed the celebration date back to December 23 herself. we still laugh about it to this very day
