THere is a such thing.
Big boned just menas you are built for a larger frame, with wider shoulders and the like. Being big boned doesn't mean you're fat though. I Have a "big boned" friend" who you describe as tall and wide, but he isn't fat. You can see him, say, as a wrestler or a football player.
But being fat doesn't mean you're big boned. Some just use that as an excuse.

Some peopole are big boned, some are smaller boned and some just have an average frame size.
Although I know some people will use that as an excuse, being big boned it no excuse for being 30lb overweight. But if they are just a few pounds overweight, then being big boned might be the reason, because BMI is based on an averge frame size.
The same problem can happen for someone who is small boned, then can appear a few pounds underweight. HTH : )

People can be big boned. They can usually carry extra weight and look slim. They will also never be a size 2 but will look like they are. I'm not talking about those people who are obviously overweight but at 140 and a size 9 juniors most people thought I was a size 4 and very slender and I'm only 5' 5". At 136 I looked sick. There are other friends of mine that spent most of their yrs in a 00 or 1 and are now a size 9-10 and look extremely overweight. My sister was at her smallest a size 12-14 and looked very slim and she's only 5'7".

People can have bigger bones, but since they make up only a small percentage of your weight even if they are bigger than normal they won't wake much of a difference in your weight. So when people say big boned, it is just a way to make it sound better.

I'm sure there are people with thick bones. But 90% of people who say that are probably just using that as an excuse.

No, it's not an excuse. I'm 5.8 and am small boned. My wrists are 5 inches around. I have tiny feet and hands. I am not meant to carry much weight. People with larger bones can get away with carrying more weight, because their body can handle it.

by saying you are big boned, it means that your skeletal structure isn't shaped like most peoples. Some people may use it as an excuse, but some people's figures are naturally wider than others. Their bones, however, are not bigger.

big boned means greater bone density than others, people with greater bone density look like they weigh less than they actually do, for example people in my family are big boned, my mom looks like she weighs 150 but on a scale she weighs 190
