You know the ones, down in the right-hand corner next to the clock. I've tried having a look in the Windows 2000 Pro Start>Help section, but can't find it.

Can you change my boohoo into a woohoooo?
Thanks folks.

Even if you click exit on them, they will return because most of them are automatically starting up. If you need the program running, most will have a "hide taskbar icon" somewhere in the preferences. Also, look for something like "automatically startup with windows".

You can download a free utility called Winpatrol at http://www.winpatrol.com where you can disable various startups from hidden places on your computer.

This definitely works in Windows XP SP2, and hope it will work for Windows 2000.

Right click the taskbar (over the arrows pointing to the left), select Properties, then select Customise (towards bottom right of dialogue box). Select each item in turn that you wish to hide and a small dropdown arrow will allow you to select one of three options:

Hide when inactive
Always hide
Always show

This way you have no need to stop any software from opening.

I've just done that!
Control panel > Add or Remove >
then click on the ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS on the left hand side. Turn off the ticks on the ones you want to remove and that should do it.

(I'm not an expert so maybe take advice from others as well!)

Dude upgrade to XP cuz its got a feature that hides icons like that, but otherwise rightclik them and hit exit, that will free up memory too, if they don't have a close option then its no program, but don't do this for virus scanner or firewall!!!
