They aren't linked, technically. Typically RAD kids have been adopted, or have had serious trauma when they were young, or were seperated from there mom as an infant early on, as in the case of a child having to stay in the hospital in an incubator. Autism isn't the result of a direct trauma, they are born with it. Sometimes the symptoms are present at birth, sometimes it takes environmental factors to bring the symptoms to the surface. For my son, he had signs at birth of something being wrong, but it wasn't until we moved to a new house that his symptoms showed themselves full-blown. He was never immunized, so no, it wasn't that, just the 'trauma' of moving to a new house. I say that carefully, because I don't mean that in the same context of the traumas I already mentioned. Now, if none of the things I mentioned apply to your child, it IS possible he is autistic, and they misdiagnosed him as being RAD. Dr.'s misdiagnose all the time, that's why I focus more on the symptoms than the label. And, if he is RAD, they could be wrong on assuming he's autistic. While they're not linked, they can mimic each other in a lot of ways, making it really confusing to know which it is. And, there's something called co-morbidity, which means that for example, it's very common for a child diagnosed as autistic to also be dx'ed with ADHD or epilepsy. It's common for a child dx'ed with ADHD to also receive the dx's of epilepsy and Tourette's, simply because they all affect the same parts of the brain. But honestly, I am on several groups for autism and I haven't heard of RAD and autism co-existing, so I don't think that would be the norm. It doesn't mean it can't happen, but in talking about a link, I haven't heard of those two being connected in that way. RAD is more of a personality issue and autism is a physical issue. I hope that helps, just a little.

Can't be sure until they're done with the assessment. Autistic kids do tend to have severe issues with that as part of resistence to change.

They're both a sign of Aspartame poisoning in the womb.
