well I actually have both, and they are both good in their own ways. I have a 11 month old baby and me and my hubby worried about which to get but we ended up getting both. First the good in a husky, they are good watch dogs, protect kids, very easy to house train, very pretty and long life span 12-16 yrs. The bad, hard to train to do anything but go outside, runners (so if they run away and don't have a micro chip there is a very good chance you won't get them back) hyper and diggers. Now for the st. The good, very loving, big teddy bear, good with kids, slow runner incase they ever try to run away and good watch dog. The bad, they are so big that they are very clumsy, can accidently hurt a toddler, lazy, can't play for too long cuz they get tired and short life span normally 8-10 yrs. The choice is up to you, but make sure you do a lot of research and not just on here. Good luck, I'd go with the St. BTW I don't know where you live but if you do go with the saint I know a great breeder E-mail me sweet_but_a_smartass@yahoo. good luck and btw, st's don't drool that much like in the movies, only right after they drink

Each of these breeds has issues that would not make it an ideal candidate for your home. Huskies are notoriously bad with cats, and St. Bernards, while normaly "gentle giants" are also like having a bull in a china shop. With 4 children running through the house with such a large dog, be prepared for some damage to occur.
Neither of these dogs are good for first time dog owners (of course, I don't know if you've owned dogs before ;)) ). Have you considered going to your local SPCA or City Animal Shelter?

If those are your only choices, then go with the St. B.
Huskies are beautiful creatures, but they have a stronger hunting instinct (your cats may be at risk). They also like to run away and need a great deal of exercise to be happy.
The Bernard will stand up to more abuse (rough and tumble) from the children, without getting snappy.
If you are open to other options, there are breed selectors online (see the link below) that will help you choose an appropriate large dog that will fit in with your family and lifestyle.

Out of the the two, I would recommend the St. Bernard around children and cats, as they are gentle giants.

Husky's are crazy around cats and won't give up. A St B drools alot and is huge, but St. B would be better because they are great with children

I read an article once on st. bernards that said that they are the most dangerous dogs to have if you also have SMALL children.
They are not vicious or anything...they just like to love on their humans, and smaller kids can literally be crushed by them.

Read up on the dogs if you want a big. Some are very good with kids and others aren't. Find out which dogs are gentle because some big dogs can turn on you . My cousin had a big dog and after several years that dog turned on the child and marred her face. She ended up going in fro surjery after she was fully grown and then she got her face fixed. They ended up putting that dog to sleep. So be real carful when choosing a dog.
