Skin problems seem to be the worst when it comes to diagnostics. It can be very challenging finding the cause. In the vet practice I work at this seems to be a very common problem. Many times the cause is an allergy to food or something in the environment. We must remember that food allergies which in humans manifest themselves usually as gastrointestinal problems in pets it mostly affects their skin. The best thing is to bring the pet to the vet and have them run some tests if nothing else seems to be causing the itching you are seeing in your pet. This may be costly and time consuming at times but it goes to the culprit of the problem. Good luck!

So many answers so little time! Fisrt in the areas you are describing I would think flea bite allergy.
There is NO such thing as an allergy shot. It is a steriod which you should avoid AT ALL COSTS!
Bendryl will help if it is a seasonal allergy to ragweed or such, not if it is a food allergy.
Food and treats can also cause these problems. If your dog is allergic to lamb or rice then that food won't help. If you are feeding anything from a grocery store, mass market, or regular petfood store then you are feeding corn, by-product, and chemicals.
See websites below to help on what foods to feed.
Also if you use Benadryl bu sure to use the NO-dye formula.
Good luck!

Take them to the Vet. Both my dogs though, have had skin problems, lately. One had a hot spot, the other was itching like crazy. We discovered some mold on the back of our shower curtain where the itchy dog likes to cuddle. Got rid of it and a new one and the problem is gone. The dog with the hot spot is okay now. He had to wear a doggie collar for a month till that healed. It could be seasonal allergies with your dogs but get it checked out.
Good luck!!

Check for fleas and ticks. if so, use a flea and tick shampoo or better yet use a flea/tick dip/ comb real well .
If your dog still itches and has crusty stuff see the vet.
I give my dog allergy pills, but that is my dog ..
fleas and ticks will leave eggs behind on dogs.and ticks are known to dig deep into the skin, so check real good especially
the head, ears, tail areas.

You can start feeding your dog some dog food that has lamb and rice. When my dog had allergies when he was a puppy, he used to gnaw on his hind legs and sneeze all the time. Now that i feed him a lamb and rice formula-based dog food, his allergies are a lot better. You may also want to consult a vet too.

This is a guess.I think they have what is called "hot spots".This makes them scratch, and scratching makes the wounds.Theres a liquid called Sulphadene (close as i could there on spelling) its about 4 to 5 bucks for hot spots and can be found in any large store in the pet section by dog shampoos.

Take your dog to the vet, to make sure your diagnosis of allergies is really what it is.
It could be a number of things. Only a vet will truly know. Plus, they will have the proper treatment to make your dog feel better.

My seven year old Chow has dry itchy skin. Talk to your vet about getting your dog cortizone shots and they may also suggest giving the dog benadryl.

My little beagle suffers badly from allergies. My vet tells me to give him one benadryl whenever his allergies is acting up. Talk to your vet and see if this is a option for your dog. It really helps my dog and its pretty cheap. Also you can have your vet give you dog some allergy shots.

This could actually be a recurring staph infection, easily and cheaply treated with antibiotics from your vet. If you don't see a vet, start seeing one now.
