I have heard anywhere from 1-20%. Which is closer and why is there so many people preaching to serve in the military, when most of them have not?!?!? Does there need to be another draft? Sorry, 2 questions.

That number would change depending on what time on our history. During WW11, Korea, and Vietnam we had the draft so the number would be number higher. The draft is only a good idea in a national emergency. I'm quite satisfied with the all volunteer military we have today. So I see no need for a draft right now.

There are about 15% of the nation serving in the armed forces. And to date there have been about 42% of the nation that has served in the armed forces.

People preach because they are afraid to join the military. Thinking its so difficult to join. And they are lazy to serve their nation. They believe they don't have to because there are approx. 500,000 soldiers in the US serving today. They are liberals who don't believe in war and conflicts for the better good of people. They think they have all the rights, and just because they are born in the US they automatically have these rights. And guess what? They are right. But they forgot that if they don't fight, that one day they'll lose those rights because the US will fall to communism or to another group of people. They forget that those rights they are exercising by "preaching" about the world today, and that many of the world don't have that right.

The draft won't be needed if we have patriotic men and women joining the military and doing their service to their country. Its patriotic and its the right thing to do to join your countries's armed forces to do whats right for yourself, and for your family and friends. The draft will only be needed if there is not enough man power in times of crisis. So if you don't want a draft. Go enlist and serve 4 years to your country. I know I have since I was 17 years old. And it was probably the best thing I've ever done. My father served before me...and so did my grandfather. Its an honor to wear the uniform.

According to the 2000 Census, there are approximately 26.4 million veterans out of a then population total of 275 million or roughly 10% of the population. (remember this was the 2000 Census, the next census is not due out for another few years). Alaska recorded the highest single state percentage with 17% of their population being veterans. Since that time the increase in Armed Forces authorized has matched pace with the increase in population (we are close to 300 million) and we do not have an accurate count of the number of undocumented immigrants which some estimate to be as high as an additional 20 million, so I would expect that number (10% of the population) to remain close to the same.

As of 2002, fewer than 6% of all Americans have been in or associated with any branch of the military.

All the men in my family have. I am not sure of the percentage, but I will say that I think there is a greater percent of southerners in the military than from other parts of the U.S.
