looking for a tree that smells good, holds decorations nicely, lives long and is pretty. average price.

OH. . .blue spruce! They are sooo beautiful. They have a great colour, are usually evenly formed, and are very full. And, yes, they smell wonderful.
Unfortunately, you may not be able to find one, but you could check. I think it would be worth growing them if you have the room just to have for Christmas each year.

Depending on where you are located, different tree types are available.
My favorites are Fraser Firs, Douglas Firs, and Blue Spruce.
My least favorite is the white pine.
The ones I mentioned first are going to be more expensive, but the fit the criteria you are looking for....

douglas firs and noble firs are the normal trees
we use the douglas because it seems to stay fuller longer and they are a little better shaped
