You can hear and see what they have for free registry programs. You say you are running Windows XP, but is it the media edition? I had nothing but reg errors and other error messages with it. I finally had to install Just the Pro version which was fine cause I wasn't using the Media features anyway.

I have used Registry First Aid for nine plus years an this program has never removed a good registry key and fixes all registry problems. The program is purchased. You can fix your problem during the evaluation period if you don't want to purchase.
http://www.rosecitysoftware.com Download their Registry First Aid. An it will perform a complete registry backup and then scan and fix any error that are found.
