Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. If it gets bad enough, it can change the shape of your chest cavity, and eventually make it hard to breathe right.
Here's a picture of really bad scoliosis:

And here's one of milder scoliosis in an adult:

It's too bad that your doctor didn't have time to explain it to you. Here's a site that will give you more information:

Hope that helps.

Scoliosis is an unnatural curving of the spine. That curving can put stress on the soft cartilage between your vertebrae, and even pinch nerves that extend out from the spine, causing you your back pain. When you bend down and touch your toes...your spine should be aligned perfectly up and down your back, but in patients with scoliosis...it is not...it's almost "S" shaped. That explain it any better?

You've gotten the explanations of what scoliosis is. As to your other question about why no one told you about it before, the most likely reason is that if your back wasn't giving you any problems, there might not have been any reason to bring it up. Many people go through life with a slight scoliosis and have no musculoskeletal problems. Also, scoliosis problems can get worse over time. Perhaps, your problem was slight before, but has been getting worse since.

Scoliosis is a term doctors use to describe a lateral curve of the spine. Depending on the etiology (cause) of the scoliosis, there may be one or more curves involved.

Like everyone else has said, it is curvature of the spine. It can range from mild to very severe. To give you an example, I have mild scoliosos but have never had to be treated. My sisters, who are taller than me, had worse scoliosis and both had surgery as teenagers. The surgeries straightened their backs nicely and they have little to no problems now.

it is curvature of the spine, some are more noticeable than others, if it is bothering you, there are exercises you can do to help...seems to me that your Dr. didnt have the time to explain things to you , I would find another one that pays more attention to you after telling you something like this.

curvature of the spine- I had it when I was younger, and grew out of it as I got older.
