It is God's inspired word, but God used flawed human beings to write it. It seems to me that we should expect it to reflect that. The Bible is like the world, a microchosm if you will. Because in the midst of the human ugliness thats in it, God's light shines brightly.

Ronin - Well, you always act like the Bible should be perfect if God is real.

2006-11-26 05:47:17 · update #1

Paul - All your doing is talking about people who did not respond appropriately to it.

Ronin - The fact is, your taking a negative perspective about topics when you do not know all the facts regarding those topics. You don't know what happened exactly and why. So your wrong for pointing your fingure at God and saying he is wrong.
As opposed to trusting God which is what you should do.

Reverand Red - Your right if sin does not matter.

Reverand - Again, all your doing is pointing your finger at God, when you really don't know what your talking about. Thats my opinion.

Paul - Were those people following the teachings of Jesus? Remember this question when you think about all the bad examples of believers.

Tree hugger - Her is what I meant. Atheists love talk about religious atocities, like the crusades. But those people were not following Jesus.

2006-11-26 06:19:55 · update #8

MC Hummer - Your response is proof that you are "tripped up". When you receive the Creator's teachings on love, you will not talk like that. Remember, there is some human junk mixed in, but thats to be expected.

I'm not sure that atheists think the bible should be "perfect" so much as it should make some sort of sense.
The more I studied it when I was in a christian church and school growing up, the less I believed it.

Edited: "Paul - All your doing is talking about people who did not respond appropriately to it."
Tell me you do not mean that...

Edited again: Not you Paul... I agree with you completely. What I don't get is Curious's response above.

"Tripped up"? Only in your wet dreams.

The only time christians "trip up" anyone is when you resort to underhanded tactics and violence, but coming from christians, that's not a surprise.

Your argument is a non-starter. If you want to talk about "inspired word", here's what you need to do:

1) Come to Taiwan, where I live.
2) Let me or someone else cut off your head with a guillotine.
3) Three days after, you have your "god" bring you back to life. Then we'll talk.

If you come here and can't come back to life, your "god" doesn't exist. If you won't show up and do it, then you're a coward who won't stand up for his beliefs.

It's in _your_ bible. _You_ say its possible. Put up or shut up.

.

Hooray for blanket statements. Pardon me while I proceed to shoot you down.

We don't get "tripped up" by the Bible. Most atheists know that it is a book filled with inconsistencies, absurdities, contradictions, violence, injustice, sexism, senseless mass genocide, racism, and MAYBE a nice moral lesson thrown in there somewhere.

If God used flawed human beings to write HIS HOLY WORD, then you have pretty much pissed on your own foot. God, supposedly, is all powerful. Why couldn't he have just written the book himself? Why did he need to enlist the assistance of uneducated Bronze Age tribesmen? (Besides which, we STILL don't know who exactly wrote the Bible. That subject is still up for debate.)

If "God's light shines brightly" in the book, it shines a wee bit TOO bright... it certainly shows your god's true colors... that your god is an egotistical, megalomaniacal, corrupt tyrant who, if he existed in this day and age, would make most Christians wish he didn't.

Tripped up how? Like we lose an argument? We don't understand it?

It seems to me that if a god can create a universe 14 billion light years across and everything in it, he can make damn sure his message is portrayed accurately and simply for the masses.

And having verse after verse after verse where god says "leave nothing alive that breathes" "Slaughter the men women and children" "Kill everything except the trees" "The children will die and there will be an outcry like no other" "Take them as slaves" etc... is hardly "inspired" word that humans kinda screwed up, it's basic simple pure evil.

How do you know Jesus was real?

How do you know the book was inspired by "god"?

2006-11-26 15:37:19 · answer #6 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

Actually no, it is nothing more than the handiwork of man. You can no more provide evidence of a work's inspiration than you can prove your "god" exists.
The majority of the Jesus story was directly plagiarized from the legends of Mithras.
