Why on earth would he do this and how can you make him stop?

The kitten has just recently been weened (probably around 8 weeks). The male cat is probably rejecting this behavior and the kitten will learn in time. He's just resisting being weened. It will pass and is not unusual or something you should be too concerned about.

It's instinctive and will probably stop on it's own - but if it really annoys you try to engage the kitten in playing or something when you see it happening. Or just don't look. When I was a kid my friend would let her kitten suck on her arm, it gave her little hickys, which her mom hated. Eventually they both got tired of it (the kitten and the friend I mean).

lol, I had gotten a kitten months ago and was about that young. He took to my rather overweight male cat and the male cat seemed to enjoy it. Grossed me out. I tried to stop it but she(the kitten) would continue. Finally, the male cat had enough and weaned her so to speak. He attacked her everytime she tried, so needless to say, she doesn't do it any longer.

It happens, he'll stop on his own eventually. Young male cats often form close attachment to neutered males because the scent they give out is similar to a female in season (so my vet told me when 1 of my neighbours unneutered toms fell in love with my neutered male cat). My youngest cat Benji moved in with us when he was about 6 weeks old because he fell in love with my male cat. Interestingly when somebody dumped kittens in my garden this spring Benji decided he was going to act as mum and washed them, played with them, and made them come in when it got dark outside.

A few years ago we had a cat with five kittens, and they enjoyed curling up with their "uncle" (he wasn't the dad, but the mom's littermate), and he would let them suck. We tried to stop it, but couldn't be there all the time. They would go to their mom for milk, then to Pouf just for comfort - because their mom couldn't stand them sucking more just for comfort, she had enough by feeding them. It was actually really funny, but Pouf enjoyed the company and the cuddling himself. His belly would just be all wet!
