We are going to be getting a westie and yorkie cross puppy on the 17th December when he will be 8 weeks old. I am just wondering if it is safe to have a real christmas tree or is it safer to get a fake one. I am worried about the dropping pines getting in his paws or is this not a problem?

Since you wouldn't be leaving an unhousetrained 8 week old puppy in your living room unsupervised anyway, get a real tree. You can easily keep an eye on him when you're in the room with him. Pine needles won't hurt him any!

It's not the pines getting in his paws that you have to worry about. It's about him eating the pine needles. I'd get a fake tree, just to be on the safe side, unless you want to have to be around him all the time to make sure that he isn't near a real tree. It just depends on the time and effort you want to put into keeping the puppy and the tree separate.

I think you should go with whatever you liike best. My boxer was about 8-10 weeks old during the chirstmas season last year. We had a real Christmas tree. She diffently tore the bottom of the tree into peices. She mostly just chewed on the branches and would jump to get oranaments. She just like playing with it more than eating it. Remember do not put any decorations or oranaments where he can reach it.

Well i am worried about that too, but I think we should buy a gate to either put around the christmas tree, or to let the dogs play in.

I would play it safe and get a fake one.Although I love the smell of pine,I wouldn't want he/she getting pines in her paws.

i do not think it will matter what you do.. i got a puppy at 7 weeks old 10 days before christmas..we still had a real tree and it did not seem to effect him.. if you think it will maybe just sweep around the tree.
