Have you any consignment stores near you?, or may one of the 'Lighthouse' type charity store.

Stay away from Antique malls, they love their stuff too much to want to sell it (or so it would seem with the prices they charge).

Also look in your local paper, it is amazing what people give away for FREE instead of dumping, many items are in immaculate condition, it is just they do not fit into the owners new decor.

Also do you have a http://www.kaboo.org in your area, they are all over the WORLD

What are you looking for exactly?

Pier I Imports is one of my favorite places to look; same for Target.

I found a wonderful extremely lightweight sofa that folds out into a queen-size bed (it's got all foam cushions and weighs about 50 pounds, or less!) from LL Bean, mail order, for about $500. They also make upholstered chairs that fold out into a twin-size bed, with matching ottomans.

I have a whole mix-match of furniture that I'm very happy with; some came from LL Bean, some from Pier I, some from K-Mart -- I put together a K-Mart dining table and 4 chairs with a hand-held electric drill and a couple of screwdrivers. I bought some chairs from thrift stores; a wicker-topped adjustable-height table came from an antique store. I bought a knotty pine love seat from Menards and put that together with screwdrivers and a set of wrenches I had to buy for that job. And I have a gorgeous 6' solid cherry desk that I had some Amish cabinetmakers hand make for me -- by my design.

And then there's the option of shopping at auctions. You can find almost anything at an auction.

It all depends what you're looking for.

My advice to you: picture what you want clearly in your mind -- and if you don't know what you want, go shopping first in decorating magazines. Get a good idea of what you want. See it in your mind's eye, where you want it. "Believe" that it's there, that you own it already.

Next time you go shopping for the items you're looking for, ask to be directed to where you'll find it, at a price you can afford.

The result just might surprise you.

You might find "just the thing" sitting along a curb somewhere, someone else's castoff, waiting for the trash pickup to come along, and you'll get just what you want, for free! I got a beautiful antique walnut dresser that way. (It was missing the "handkerchief drawers" in the top; I lugged it home with me, painted it white because it was already wearing three scarred coats of awful paint, added some new "antique" drawer pulls, found some little bitty baskets I already owned that fit right into the "handkerchief drawer" spots, and I was in business. Brand new dresser, solid walnut, all for the price of some paint and hardware.)

If you buy everything "new," from a retail store, what you buy won't mean as much to you. The items won't have the "story" built into them, not like looking around the room and seeing "Grandma's dresser that I refinished" (remembering Grandma every time you walk by it), "the walnut dresser I rescued from the trash truck," the coffee table from "that cute little antique store up in the mountains where we almost got snowed in on the way back home," the desk from "that auction in the country where it was freezing and I was wearing the baby carrier with little Johnnie strapped onto my chest, covered up with layers of blankets, and someone came up to me and asked 'is that a portable heater you've got there?'," the wicker table from "the auction where I stuffed the table in the back of the blue '81 Honda Accord, with the three kids, and a whole back seat full of other stuff, and we made it home with three kids riding on top of each other in the front seat!"

Redecorating can be a very creative adventure and filled with lots of fun memories!

Ikea.
It's really inexpensive and has modern items that look great for any room in your house.
The reason it's cheap is because you have to put together pretty much everything yourself, but sometimes that's fun too!
