A friend of mine has an autistic 15 year old boy; he was diagnosed when he was about two. Autistics basically live in their own inner world and have problems to communicate with other people. They just cannot interact with other people.

what is autism?
I am sure someone will come by and cut and paste something for you off the web. I will give you what I a mother of a autistic child thinks of it in a nut shell....
Autism has a huge range of symptoms. People with autism are "off" just a little. There are different ranges of Autism to the sever, such as the movie Rain Man. To the mildly autistic, such as a condition they are calling Aspergers Syndrome. ADHD being one of the symptoms of this condition.
My child is "different". he has some physical conditions which people can see, but then when someone talks to him this is when people really notice. He can be extremely shy to new places and new people. He is a little "slow" people say (I do not think he is slow at all, but very smart!). He has problems with hygiene, clothing himself, and many other "things".

Hope it helps...this is such a BIG category I could talk all day long about it....

Autism is a disease that is characterized by developmental delays, including social interaction and verbal as well as non-verbal communication. It occurs in approximately 1 out of 166 births. It occurs approximately four times more in boys than in girls. Approximately 1 to 1.5 million Americans are living with autism.

Autistic children are quite often resistant to change, do not want to be held or cuddled, often act deaf, although their hearing is normal, show little or no eye contact, prefer to be alone rather than in a group of other children, and poor gross motor skills.

There is no known single cause for autism, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in the way the brain is structured as well as its function.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects people from birth. It's origin is unknown, but is thought to be genetic in nature. A person with autism is likely to have problems with communication and socialization - like, they may take longer learning to talk, or require specialized instruction to learn to talk. Also, they are often easily overstimulated and need to get away from people and crowds. They often have ritualized behaviors, and are very invested in their routine.

Autism is a condition in children where they do not respond to contact with people and are more occupied with inanimate objects. They do not like to be cuddled. Their speech develops late. They remain for a long time in bizarre postures. They are often wrongly thought to be retarded. Parents are sometimes wrongly blamed. It has nothing to do with upbringing.
