only earn £500 and work for a Bank so I have to have my salary paid into the Bank where I work, which is not First Direct.

I just phoned them about £10 charge due to start in feb. I told them that I do not want Loan or Credit Card, I have my mortgage and insurance with my employer.

They opened a savings account for me over the phone. As long as I pay something into it each month, even as little as £1.00 every month I do not have to pay the £10 charge.

The savings account must not go dormant (no activity) as if it does I will be liable to pay the £10 account fee.

Easy way around the problem which may be of use to others out there.

It's for people silly enough to stay with them. You can always avoid their charge by opening a deposit account and keeping a tiny amount in it, less than £10.

You don't pay if you've got a deposit account with them, or if at least £1,000 a month goes through your bank account. So yes! It's not so much a fee as a request to take your business eleswhere.
