People say hello to be polite. i say who's this or speak when i pick up the phone if people don't like it then they shouldn't call me. i think people should say what they want to say and be creative.

People are greeting the person calling. They need to say something -- hello is a friendly greeting and appropriate.

It is a very nice, brief form to greet the caller. It amounts to welcoming the caller with Namaste, Good morning or other local versions of greeting the person who has called youn and It is non-sectarian.

the inventor of the telephone started it....
i don't remember the whole story, but when telephones were first invented and came into use the inventor(s) realized that there needed to be a greeting for answering a phone.....it was between "hello" and something else which i can't remember.....

because its a greeting, to let the other person on the other end know someoen is there...if they called and got nothing then they would think that no one was there and hang up..its a normal thing to do..if you like you can say "amit here what can I do for you" its the same thing, if you just grunted or something that wouldnt be cool.

to informally greet the person who is calling. it's a polite way to start out the conversation about to begin. it sounds more cultured than to use YEAH, WHAT?, SPEAK, YOO, etc.
